Build Your Archery Skills

The Beginners Course is the next step for new archers who have completed a Have a Go session and are members of Tauranga Archers. This course provides structured coaching to develop safe, competent shooting with a sighted ILF bow — the type of equipment most archers use as they progress.

This course consists of three 2-hour sessions on consecutive Saturdays and concludes with a Qualifying Shoot that must be passed to shoot independently on the range.

Who the Course Is For

  • Participants aged 11 years and over

  • Participants Under 11 please see our U11 Pathway. 

  • Those who have completed a Have a Go session

  • Members of Tauranga Archers
    Before enrolling in this course, you must have joined the club. 

Parents or caregivers should remain onsite for participants under 14 years old.

What You’ll Learn

Over the course, you will:

  • Reinforce safe range practices and etiquette

  • Learn correct stance, aiming, and shooting technique

  • Improve consistency and accuracy

  • Practice using a sighted bow in a coached environment

  • Complete a Qualifying Shoot to meet the standard for unsupervised shooting with other archers 

Coaching focuses on strong foundations and confidence building.

Equipment Provided & Required

Most equipment is supplied, including:

  • Recurve ILF bows

  • Arrows

All participants are required to wear:

  • A Finger Tab (with shelf)

  • An Arm Guard

​​​​​​​These items are available to purchase through the club or from an archery shop. 

  • A shelf Finger Tab similar to this is recommended for this course. These are adjustible to suit your hand. The club has a small supply of unbranded finger tabs available for purchase at $25 each in different colours & sizes.
  • An arm guard is also required to be worn. There are a wide range of options available. We have unbranded versions available for purchase. Small $5.50 & Medium $9.50.

Basic tabs and arm guards may be available for free use, but owning your own is recommended for best progress.

What to Wear & Bring

For safety and comfort, please:

  • Wear closed-in shoes (no jandals or sandals)

  • Avoid loose or baggy clothing

  • Tie long hair back

  • Bring a drink bottle

  • Dress appropriately for the weather
    ​​​​​​​(rain jacket, gumboots, sun hat, sunscreen)

Sessions run rain or shine, unless conditions are unsafe.

Booking & Payment

  • Cost: $30 per person for all three sessions 

  • Booking and payment are required at the time of registration

  • Registrations close at 8:00am the day before the course starts 

  • Spaces are usually limited (often around 9 per course)

To take part in a 'Beginners Course', you need to first become a full member of the club.

What Happens Next?

After completing the Beginners Course successfully, participants can:

  • Continue to Participate in regular club shooting sessions

  • Continue developing skills through events and coaching opportunities

  • We now encourage you to purchase your own equipment from Auckland Archery Supplies or another store of yoru choice.

This course readies you to shoot safely and confidently with other club members.
